A pool leak can lead to higher water bills, equipment damage, and even structural problems if it is not fixed early. While some water loss is normal due to evaporation, excessive water loss usually means there is a leak somewhere in the pool system. Knowing the signs of a pool leak can help you catch the problem early and avoid expensive repairs.

Your Pool Is Losing Water Quickly

All pools lose some water due to evaporation, especially during hot weather. However, if your pool is losing more than about a quarter inch of water per day, there may be a leak.

Signs of abnormal water loss include constantly adding water, the water level dropping quickly after filling, the water level dropping even when the pool is not being used, or wet areas forming around the pool.

Wet Spots Around the Pool

If you notice soggy grass, wet soil, or soft ground around your pool, this could indicate a leak in the plumbing lines or pool structure. Water escaping underground often creates soft spots, sinking areas, or constantly damp ground near the pool or equipment pad.

Cracks Around the Pool or Deck

Cracks in the pool structure, concrete deck, or surrounding area can be a sign of shifting ground or water escaping from the pool. Even small cracks can allow water to escape over time and should be inspected.

Look for cracks in concrete, loose tiles, gaps around the skimmer, or shifting patio stones around the pool.

Air Bubbles Coming From Return Jets

If you see air bubbles coming out of your pool return jets, there may be a suction side leak in the plumbing system. This could be caused by cracked pipes, loose pump lids, worn O-rings, or leaking plumbing connections.

Air in the system is often one of the first signs of a plumbing leak.

Algae Growth or Chemical Issues

If your pool chemicals are suddenly difficult to balance or algae keeps returning even after treatment, a leak may be allowing fresh water to enter the pool and dilute the chemicals. Constant chemical imbalance can sometimes point to a hidden leak.

Water Around Pool Equipment

Water around your pump, filter, heater, or plumbing lines can indicate a leak in the equipment system. Small drips or slow leaks can waste a lot of water over time and should be repaired quickly.

Pool Leak Detection and Repairs

If you suspect your pool has a leak, it is important to find the source as soon as possible. Professional pool leak detection can identify leaks in liners, plumbing lines, skimmers, drains, and equipment before the problem becomes more serious.

If your pool is losing water, has wet spots around the yard, or shows signs of a leak, professional inspection and repair can prevent bigger and more expensive damage later.
